A guarantee of a fear-free society is needed

In most developing countries, words and actions rarely align. It is often proclaimed that the citizens of these countries are free and independent; but are they truly free citizens of a free nation? One of the key prerequisites of democracy is the establishment of a fear-free society. Yet, in these countries, people are often seen reacting—even for irrational reasons. As a result, various obstacles and barriers appear for anyone who steps forward to express their views. Even the freedom of movement—being able to move about freely—is disrupted.

The groups from whom these obstacles arise are, in reality, very small in number. Among the tens of millions of people in a country, the vast majority are harmless and innocent. They do not engage in power politics, yet they become puppets in the daily games of a few thousand or a few hundred thousand influential individuals. At the gestures of these powerful actors, the masses become silent. Because of them, a climate of fear spreads throughout society. The media, recognizing this reality, then resorts to self-censorship.

A lack of tolerance and patience is also common among most leaders in the Third World. Because of the absence of a liberal democratic mindset and perspective, the society and state machinery of these nations remain perpetually tense. Although the terms “free society” and “free media” are used for show or to maintain appearances, criticism is rarely tolerated. Leaders might speak of “thinking before speaking,” yet even when one speaks thoughtfully, they still react sharply. Whether such statements are rational or not should be left to the people’s own judgment.

Ordinary people can be subdued for some time, but never forever. A moment eventually comes when their fear disappears—when they have nothing left to lose. Then these countries plunge into disorder and instability. In the developing world, sufficient efforts are already lacking in creating employment for young people. Many basic human rights remain unmet. As a result, these countries remain on the brink of disorder, chaos, and explosions of unrest at all times.

In such circumstances, at the very least, people must have the freedom to speak and move freely so that they can find an outlet for their frustration and despair—even if only for the sake of emotional relief.
